There are numerous sub-parallel transform (strike-slip) faults in this region. The most recent earthquake is a <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usc000tlun#general_summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M = 5.7<\/a> and is plotted as the most southerly orange dot in this map. Orange denotes a hypocentral depth of 0-33 km. There was a swarm further to the north in <a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/?p=1892\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May of 2014<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_global_map.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_global_map.JPG\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHere is the same map with historic earthquakes plotted as grey circles. One may observe the north-south oriented ridges in the sea floor. These are the various faults associated with this plate boundary. There appear to be 4 or 5 major faults.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_regional_map.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_regional_map.JPG\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis map is also at a regional scale and shows how broadly distributed the seismicity is along the PFZ.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_regional_map_historic.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150205_panama\/20150205_panama_regional_map_historic.JPG\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nToday&#8217;s M = 5.7 earthquake is just to the south west of the M = 5.1 from 1\/31\/15 plotted on this map. I discussed the PFZ on an earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/?p=2132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150131_panama\/20150131_panama_interpretation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/earthjay.com\/earthquakes\/20150131_panama\/20150131_panama_interpretation.jpg\"width=\"100%\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHere is the moment tensor from this M = 5.7 earthquake.
