I will be filling this in over the next few days and wanted to start collating social media materials for this event.<\/p>\n

There was a large volcanic eruption in the Tonga region. This eruption was observable from satellites and has generated a modest but observable tsunami from Australia to the United States.<\/p>\n

This event is still unfolding and it will take months until we have a deeper understanding of the causes for the tsunami. We know it is related to the explosive volcanic eruption from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, about 55 kms (35 miles) northwest of the largest island of the Kingdom of Tonga, Tongatapu.<\/p>\n

I will continue to fill in details. I am currently busy trying to manage our tsunami event response and am learning lots in the process. However, this delays my time available here.<\/p>\n

This week, CGS sent teams to various harbors & beaches on the California coast to collect measurements, photos, & videos documenting the effects of the Jan. 15 #tsunami<\/a> from Tonga.
